Affordable food, clean streets and generous locals. Train travel was easy, clean and moderately priced. Getting away from the big cities gives you a rural taste to this amazing and HUGE country. The standard of living is higher than much of Asia and housing appears to be built to a higher building code. Once you head into the local communities it is easy to live well on a small budget. It all depends on where you go, for example I'm sure the quiet villages far from the tourist trail continue to be easily affordable. Also in hotspots like Koh Lipe you can almost double all these figures. The 4 of us try to live on US$35 per day... which is certainly tough at times, but mostly we manage. please note: this amount only covers food and accommodation costs. We have a separate budget for transport and activities. 1. When in restaurants, order the local dishes. Here in Hoi An, you can order Cao Lau (noodles, beansprouts, salad and pork) pretty much everywhere for $1-$2 and it is delicious. Almost everywhere you travel in Asia you can find a local dish for around $2 per person, whether it be mi goreng in Indonesia, or pad thai in Thailand etc. 2. Eat the street food. It is delicious and cheap! Our local Pho stall in Vietnam is amazing and costs less than $1 per serve. 3. Be aware that drinks double your restaurant bill. We sometimes order drinks but mostly take bottled water with us to the restaurants. 4. Snuggle in: we normally share a triple room if possible and sometimes a double room if the bed is big enough. 5. Try to book somewhere with a free breakfast! It's suprising how much that little meal can cost you. 6. Always ask taxi's to use the meter. This is almost always cheaper than a fixed price deal! ...unless travelling by tuktuk, where anything goes. 7. Use booking sites like agoda or bookings.com to get the best accommodation deals along the way. We typically book the first few nights in a new place, then go searching for a better deal once we arrive. Here is an idea of some basic costs here in Vietnam. These costs are found at the cheaper places and certainly not the high end cafe's or restaurants. We recommend the Areca Homestay in Hoi An which has large family rooms with one king and two singles and a large balcony for US$18 including breakfast. We book the first 3 nights on arrival using Agoda. striking the balance links:First of all it's good to understand that these prices are for Luang Prabang, which is more expensive than the rest of Laos. It is, however also the most visited place in Laos and the most likely to be on your bucket list. Also, we try and eat as cheaply as possible, so you can of course spend far more than this if your budget allows: Entry level prices 2017: local currency US$ $NZ street food main meal from 10,000 Kip 1.20 1.70 large local beer from 10,000 Kip 1.20 1.70 fruit shakes from 10,000 Kip 1.20 1.70 60 minute massage from 40,000 Kip 5 7 restaurant meal for 4 (including drinks) from 100,000 Kip 12 17 triple rooms from 30 43 We recommend the Phasith Guesthouse which was perfectly located just on the edge of this small town, surrounded by cheap eateries.
