LIVING LIKE LOCALS We have been in An Bang for 3 weeks now and have made plenty of friends already. We get discounted food prices... somewhere inbetween the local price and the tourist price. There is no shortage of playdates for the children and we are all feeling calm and relaxed having a real home for a month. The kids are LOVING playing at the beach everyday and having their own room. I am LOVING having a washing machine and have washed everything we have with us. The Dutchman is LOVING having a kitchen to whip us up plenty of great food! You can see what he's been cooking by clicking here... GROUND HOG DAY This is a bit of on idea of how our day goes... 8am: The Dutchman heads for the markets for our days haul. Camp Mum on washing duty. 9am: breakfast around the table. pancakes with fresh fruit, omelettes or Pho Bo, mango and coffee 10am-12pm: school is in session. 1pm: Lunch time. Cao lau, Bahn Mi or something at home. More Mango. 2-3pm down time (blogging, tablet time, reading, through the hottest of the day) 3-5pm: stroll around the village, hanging at the beach, swimming, building sand castles. 6pm: beer or juice on the balcony. Passion fruit, More Mango. 7pm: gastronomic delight at home/ local restaurant dinner or 5km motorbike ride into beautiful Hoi An. 9pm: all tucked up in bed, ready to do it all again tomorrow. WORLD SCHOOL We try to do 2 structured hours per day, four days per week. The children are pretty good at finding a workstation and staying on task. We are very aware that they learn so much more from the other 12 hours they're awake, but nice to maintain their school skills none the less. We have been teaching English to the local children every Sunday afternoon at a nearby café and spent a morning at cooking school. MOVIE STARS I think the children have been photographed more by other people than by us! There is constant stream of 'beautiful girl' and 'handsome boy". G7's blonde hair seems just too tempting for many locals and both children have sore cheeks from being pinched so often. G7's classic comment: "Can I dye my hair black please so they will leave me alone?" HEALTH Just a dentist visit in Da Nang for A9 with tooth ache, and Dr's visit in Hoi An for the Dutchman's infected mozzie bite. NIGHT ANIMALS Alas not us as we are all tucked up by 10pm most nights, but so far in the last 6 weeks we have been woken up by:
LITTLE TROOPERS A9 and G7 have been amazing, happily donning their heavy packs as we move from place to place. Without complaint for over an hour one night while we looked for a room (the one we had booked and paid for had been sold on...unfortunately this is common practice here and has happened 3 times to us already). Everyone is pulling their weight packing now, with the kids managing their own things and it is already a pretty efficient process.
It's worth noting that most people travel on a budget much higher than this. You would have a fabulous time travelling on double this figure. A lovely room costs US $35-$50, and most of the fancy restaurants have main meals for US$4-5.
