One of Lombok's original tourist resorts, Senggigi manages to maintain a calm chilled vibe, a far cry from the popular tourist traps of neighbouring Bali. With jungle covering the hills behind and coconut palms providing some shade to the grey sand beach, Senggigi had a lovely feel about it . The beach was nothing like the Gili's, but never-the-less we happily spent 5 days using Senggigi as a base We took a great day trip exploring the temples, arts and crafts of Lombok. We started with traditional pottery, weaving and paddyfields before visiting the Narmada Water Palace and Pura Suranadi. Some of the best food of our Indonesian adventure, Senggigi had an excellent mix of restaurants and beach warungs. Arguably the best breakfast buffet at the Kila Senggigi and the most affordable massages of our trip so far. Our recommendations: Warung Amelia for cheap and cheerful, Taman for great indian cuisine, and Coco Loco for delicious thai food. Asmara and Rinjani (at Kila) produced exceptional local foods but with higher price tags. We stayed at the Kila Senggigi (now known as the Merumatta Senggigi) which was sublime. We visited the Sheraton, which was positioned on the nicest part of the beach. They are both great beach front options and totally unusual for us to splash out on our backpacker budget. One of the most spectacular sunsets I have ever seen, with Bali's majestic volcano Agung in the back ground. Only enhanced by the happy hour cocktail specials... 2022 UPDATE Poor Senggigi. Since we last visited in 2016, Lombok has been affected by a devastating earthquake and then a global pandemic. Many businesses were closed and bordered up. The people remain friendly, but the beach area was a little dirty and unkempt. Even so, we enjoyed our one night stay in Senggigi before flying back to Denpasar.
